Pop quiz today.

Say you’re building the ultimate cyclocross frameset– not based strictly on classic craftsmanship, I mean. Ultimate as in fast and versatile. We’re talking something more than ten people a year can buy, here.

Think “really light,” plus this:

What’s it look like?

Ultimate Cyclocross Frame
  •   Steel
      Aluminum
      Carbon Fiber
  •   Disc
      Rim
      Disc and Rim
  •   68mm English
      BB30
      PressFit30
      386EVO
  •   1-1/8-inch
      1-1/8 to 1-1/4-inch Tapered
      1-1/8 to 1.5-inch Tapered

  1. And don’t forget to have it built with 135 rear spacing but include some sort of gizmo to run it 130.

  2. Think steel? Easily repairable, relatively inexpensive, old school style with new school tech.
68mm bottom bracket? It’s worked for over 100 years plus with Chris King it’s serviceable for a long time.
1 1/8 to 1 1/2 taper? King makes bearings for that too.
Not an employee of king. Their stuff just works forever and parts available

  3. I hear you. King at the front of the drop back to 1-1/8-inch to 1-1/4-inch tapered, too, though (interesting). Also have a lot to think about when it comes to BB. Hitting a moving target in terms of where product development will be in two years. Only thing I’ve committed to is the need to have some BB that will either work directly with a 68mm English or accommodate it pretty cleanly. PF30 has the potential to fit both a PF30 BB and an eccentric.

  4. Thanks, Ernesto. Even if we go disc-only, you think? I get the BH thing (pretty damn slick–that Mr. Cocalis sure is clever), but I’m betting on discs taking over ‘cross. Bad bet? Hope to see you in Vegas.
